San Francisco, CA - Kitchen
This kitchen is very small by today's standards yet typical of a lot of homes in the city of San Francisco. There were some obstacles to overcome such as maximizing countertop space without crowding the work area, making sure there was sufficient storage for the homeowner's belongings and ensuring a complete line of appliances would fit into the mix as well.
The peninsula was a great solution for the countertop dilemma and also aided with storage. It was built in three separate sections and then assembled into one unit on site. The section against the wall has two shelves and two drawers. The shelves are continuous through the entire length of the section so that items can be accessed from either side. The sink base has ample storage for a garbage can, cleaning supplies and other miscellaneous items while the front section contains enough storage for dishes, glasses, etc.
The pantry contains a broom closet and several pull-out shelves to ease the burden of reaching for items in the back. The bottom drawer comes completely out of the pantry and can be wheeled around for whatever purpose the homeowner desires. The main area has a single door constructed to appear as two and the double-door section above has two shelves tall enough to house the largest of countertop appliances.
The addition of a space for a microwave in the Glass Paneled Cabinet allowed for even more countertop space usability without the worry of one more appliance in the way. The Rolling Butcher Cart utilizes the full depth and height of all drawers for storage and still retains its centerpiece quality.
These cabinets were made from solid American Cherry that was hand selected, milled and finished by the artisan. The door panels and drawer bottoms are the only items that are not solid wood. The panels were made from 3/8" cherry veneer plywood and the drawer bottoms from 1/4" cherry veneer plywood. The door hinges are the only mechanical hardware that exist in the cabinets.
